"Invitation Only" BBQ World Championships
We have been invited to six invitation only world championships
The Jack
Daniel's Invitational World Barbecue Championship is the
hardest and most sought after invitation. We were invited
and competed in 2002 and
2003 and were on the short list
for 2004. Food TV filmed as at the 2002 event.
The American
Royal Invitational is the biggest World championship on the
Kansas City Barbecue Society circuit. Every contestant has
won a Major event or State championship. In 2002 cooking
against the best of the best we brought home 10th Place in Ribs.
The day after the invitational they hold the Open which is the
biggest BBQ contest in the world. At the
2003 Open we
finished 4th place in Chicken and 16th Overall out of 400
teams. We were also invited in and 2004. Food TV &
Potter Productions Filmed us at the 2003 event.
In 2004 the
National Barbecue News organized the Best of the Best World
Championship inviting the top teams to compete. We
were invited but were unable to attend due to catering
commitments.

2003 15th Annual Jack Daniel's World
Championship, Lynchburg, Tennessee

Well just being invited is an honor. This is
the hardest to get invitation in the BBQ world. The big news for us was
our 10 year old daughter, who decided she wanted to enter the dessert category.
While an avid chef at home she had never entered a cooking contest of any kind
ever in her life. Her idea of a good contest is to watch movies or find a
new friend. After a brainstorming session with Paul and the Raccoon Flats
BBQ team from Iowa a plan was hatched.
Amelia did everything. First she visited the
Lynchburg Hardware store for presentation supplies. Then the Lynchburg
Drugstore store for ice cream. Using a jar of home made Strawberry jam
from Joyce Deeds a relative in Nebraska she prepared her Strawberry Sundaes.
Amelia did it all herself, we did not have time to help we were trying to win.
While we had a middle of the pack
finish, Amelia going against 60 of the best teams in the world finished in 14th
place our teams highest finish that day. This was our proudest moment in
2003.
24th Annual
American Royal
Barbecue 2003 "Largest Barbecue Contest in the World"
American Royal Complex, Kansas City, MO

Click for larger image Friday (Invitational) was disappointing with a
middle of the pack 43rd out of 85 finish. Saturday (Open) was very
satisfying, we improved on our 2002 10th Place Ribs and 10th place Sauce
finish to 4th place Chicken and 3rd place in sauce. Our 2002 81st out of
380 overall finish improving to a 16th out of 400 teams. After 18th months on
the competition circuit the results are heading in the right direction.

Qualified us for the 2004 American Royal
Invitational and the 2004 Jack Daniel's World Championship drawing
We left Seattle area on Wednesday morning and
drove straight through to Nebraska arriving on Thursday evening in Phyllis'
home town of Shelton. No sooner had we said Hi than we started cooking
Brisket and ribs for her cousins wedding rehearsal dinner on Friday.
After delivering the food we arrived in Omaha just in time for the cooks
meeting. We cooked against 70 other teams and decided to only cook the 4
meats that counted towards Grand Champion. We had no idea how well we
had done. It was a great field and 100% of the judges were Kansas City
Barbeque Society, Certified Barbeque Judges (KCBS CBJ). Most of our
finishes were ties for a higher place, as ties are not allowed our placing
shuffled down based on a computer coin toss. Another story is in the Greater Omaha
Barbeque Society Drippings (11MB pdf. Adobe Acrobat required to read it.)
Montana
State BBQ Championship 2003
Stevensville, MT

We returned to what in our opinion is
the best little BBQ contest in the west. The Norman Rockwell town of
Stevensville is the original settlement in Montana. We repeated our 1st in
Ribs, 3rd in Chicken and Pork results of 2002 and turned our no show in Brisket
of 2002 into 1st Place Brisket for 2003. This was a qualifier which means
we will be going to the American Royal Invitational in Kansas City the "World
Series" of BBQ and qualify for the Jack Daniel's World Championship Invitational
BBQ drawing.

2003 "Big Chill" Sun & Snow BBQ
Harrah’s & Harvey’s Lake Tahoe, NV

Big Chill was no joke with below
freezing temps and at times near white out blizzard conditions. Jeff Jones
and the California BBQ Association did a great job. This was our first
KCBS contest outside of the Jack or the Royal. We came home with the 1st place
Brisket Trophy and Reserve Grand Champion.

This was the inaugral
Pike Place Market BBQ contest with 30 teams competing. We
brough home Grand Champion, 1st Place Salmon and 2nd Place
Sausage. This was followed by a huge media blitz on
Radio, Newspapers and Magazines. Phyllis also lost her bet with Konrad
saying they could only go to Lake Tahoe if they won Pike's Place Market.
